Formerly, the task was to supply the things that men wanted. The new necessity is to make men want the things which machinery must turn out, if civilization is not to perish. The problem before us today is not how to produce the goods, but how to produce the customers.
— Samuel Strauss, 1924 (via jstn)

Your father, outraged at your flouting of his generation’s values, bursts into your room. Bellowing nonsense, the familiar scent of cheap whiskey on his breath, he snaps your board in half. You briefly consider purchasing a new one, but the sting of your father’s belt leads you to abandon the idea. You drop skating altogether and devote yourself to your studies, eventually graduating magna cum laude. Your father dies of alcohol poisoning a week later, and, on the plane back from the funeral, you meet Sarah. The two of you get married, settle down in a nearby suburb, and produce three children. You’re not sure how you’re going to make ends meet with your office job: the hours are long and the pay is low, but you feel confident that hard work will see you through. On your way out of the team-building seminar, however, you trip on an exposed stone and totally beef it all over the pavement. Combo breaker!

What they failed to realize is that the CD gravy train would soon come to an end as people finally replenished their collections and went back to their normal buying routines. The years of off the chart sales came to an abrupt end and corporations were stuck with bloated record divisions and they had no clue what to do - the end result when you replace creative minds seeking talent with bean counters seeking profit.

Since marketing no longer means dealing with independent radio promoters, radio stations, and music video television stations for play and instead means building real, trust-based relationships with fans directly, there’s no efficiency in marketing Robbie Williams today and Iron Maiden tomorrow. You’re lacking the focus a Vagrant or Victory (or closer to my heart, Dischord or from the “wildly profitable” category, Jive in its late 90s heyday) who are more or less going back to the same group of fans with each release. Hell, Vagrant even spun off two new labels, one for kids and one for heavier music. They’re focusing on what they know and segmenting their marketing efforts by affinity group.
